How to Check Tire Tread Depth Safely

Coin tests, tread wear indicators, legal minimums, and when uneven wear means alignment or suspension work.

Tread depth controls how quickly your tires evacuate water in rain. Worn rubber lengthens stopping distances and raises aquaplaning risk long before a tire looks bald to the eye.

Many regions require about 1.6 mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tire. Safety organisations often recommend replacing at 3 mm for wet-weather performance โ€” grip falls sharply below that.

Check all four tires plus the spare if you carry one. Inner edges can wear faster on misaligned front wheels while the outer shoulder looks fine.

The coin test (quick field check)

Insert a small coin into the main groove with the head facing down. If the top of the head remains visible, tread is near or below common legal limits โ€” book inspection soon.

Digital tread gauges cost little and remove guesswork. Measure three points across each tire and record readings in your service log.

Wear bars and factory indicators

Modern tires mould raised bars in the grooves at the legal limit depth. When the tread surface is flush with those bars, the tire is due for replacement.

Siping โ€” thin cuts in blocks โ€” disappears as rubber wears. Winter tires especially lose bite when siping is gone even if depth seems adequate.

Uneven wear patterns

Outer edge only: often under-inflation or aggressive cornering on FWD cars.

Inner edge only: camber or alignment issue โ€” fix geometry before fitting new rubber.

Centre ridge: chronic over-inflation reducing contact patch.

Cupping / scalloped patches: worn shocks or unbalanced wheels.

Rotate tires per manufacturer schedule only after correcting pressure and alignment faults, otherwise you spread uneven wear around the car.

Seasonal checks and wet-weather grip

Measure tread before winter and again after long summer road trips. Rubber hardens with age even when depth looks fine โ€” a six-year-old tire with legal tread can still aquaplane early.

After hitting a pothole, inspect sidewalls for bubbles the same day. Sidewall damage does not always show in tread readings but fails catastrophically at motorway speeds.

Log readings in your phone notes with date and mileage. Trending faster wear on one corner catches alignment issues before you buy four new tires.

FAQ

Do I need matching tires on one axle?** Yes โ€” mixed brands or depths can unsettle ABS and stability control.

Can I replace just one tire?** On AWD vehicles, all four should match closely; on 2WD, axle pairs should match.

How often should I check?** Monthly and before long trips; immediately after hitting a pothole or curb.
