Before you travel

Exterior and structural red flags

Panel gap inconsistency, fresh paint on one quarter, and overspray on trim suggest accident repair — walk if seller denies when magnet test shows filler. Check VIN plate, windscreen etching, and service book stamps align. Tyre wear should match claimed mileage — feathered edges imply alignment neglect or suspension wear.

Underbody rust on sill seams and subframe mounts kills MOT later — poke with screwdriver on older imports. Glass dates mismatching year hints replacement after incident. Use torch in wheel arches for fresh underseal hiding corrosion.

Mechanical and electronic checks

Cold start essential — listen two minutes for diesel rattle, VVT chatter, or exhaust smoke. OBD scan for pending codes seller cleared recently — check readiness monitors complete. Test ABS on gravel if safe; pull away in second on steep hill for clutch slip.
