For most of the last decade, autonomous driving has been overhyped, underdelivered and constantly redefined. The version promised on today's market โ hop in, nap, arrive โ has not arrived. What has arrived is genuinely impressive and quietly transforming daily driving.
Understanding SAE levels matters because marketing names blur them. "Full Self-Driving" is not full self-driving. This guide separates promise from product.
Level 2: the technology you actually have

Expect slow geographic expansion for years, not nationwide rollout next quarter.
Level 5: not on the horizon
Full autonomy everywhere, any weather, no steering wheel โ is not on credible public roadmaps. Solving 99% of driving is achievable; the last 1% of edge cases may cost more than the first 99%.
What buyers should do on today's market
Every new car offers impressive assist. None lets you sleep. Buy ADAS for fatigue reduction and safety margin, not because you dislike driving. Read your system's manual โ limits vary more than badge names suggest.
